You may have heard that the federal Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act provided financial resources to colleges and universities. The resources available through the Higher Education Emergency Relief (HEER) Fund allow universities to distribute grants to students in need to cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19.

The amount of each HEER Fund Grant is based on eligibility for need-based federal financial aid and the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) generated from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Since EFC varies by family, the amount of the grants varies for each student, and ranges from $200 to $1,000 for the spring semester. To help with disruptions in the summer, if you also enroll for Maymester, Summer Short I or Extended summer or Thru sessions you will be eligible for another grant, ranging from $125 to $500.

Students who qualify for these grants were notified by May 12.

Appealing Your HEER Fund Grant*

The COVID-19 situation has created many scenarios in which students’ financial situations (or their families’ situations) have changed significantly. The University of Georgia has earmarked a portion of the HEER Fund allocation to be used for appeal applications from those students who have exceptional needs.

To apply for those grants, follow the link below. Students must have a valid FAFSA on file and be eligible to receive federal student financial aid to be eligible for the HEER Fund grants.

*This is also the process to use if you did not receive a HEER Fund Grant and would like to be considered.

If you were enrolled during Spring 2020 during the disruptions caused by COVID-19 and you have exceptional needs or expenses related to the disruptions, you may appeal the amount or eligibility for HEER Fund grants. Be sure UGA has received your valid 2019-20 FAFSA by June 1, 2020 and complete the HEER Fund Grant Appeal Application by June 15, 2020 for priority consideration of funds. Appeal applicants will be notified by June 26 of the appeal committee’s decision.

Appeals applications submitted after June 15 will be considered if funds remain. Keep in mind the total amount of HEER Fund monies a student can receive is $1,500, even with an appeal.
