Dear Student,

You may have heard that the federal Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act provided financial resources to colleges and universities. The resources available through the Higher Education Emergency Relief (HEER) Fund allow universities to distribute grants to students in need to cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19.

You are receiving this letter because you qualify for financial assistance through this program based on criteria established by the US Department of Education.

The amount of each HEER Fund Grant is based on eligibility for need-based federal financial aid and the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) generated from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Since EFC varies by family, the amount of the grants varies for each student, and ranges from $200 to $1,000 for the spring semester. To help with disruptions in the summer, if you also enroll for Maymester, Summer Short I, Extended summer or Thru sessions you will be eligible for another grant, ranging from $125 to $500.*

For students enrolled in the spring semester, the first payment will be processed beginning May 19, 2020. For students enrolled for both Spring 2020 and one of the Summer 2020 sessions, the second payment will be processed beginning June 16, 2020.

Here are five important details to keep in mind:

  • You must be enrolled at the University of Georgia to continue to receive your funds (e.g., if you graduate in May, you would only receive the spring payment but not the summer payment).
  • The maximum amount any student can receive from the payments is a combined total of $1,500.
  • Based on special circumstances, a student may appeal their HEER Fund Grant amount awarded to them by accessing the HEER Fund page of the UGA coronavirus site. This will be reviewed by a committee of university personnel.
  • You will receive grant funds through the refund profile you established with UGA Student Account Services. HEER Fund grants will be paid directly to you and even if you owe a balance to the university, the grant will be paid directly to you to help offset COVID-19 related expenses. To establish/review your refund profile, please log into ATHENA and go to Access Student Account. For detailed instructions on how to establish or update your refund profile, please see the refund profile setup instructions.
  • This grant does not affect your other financial aid awards. You will continue to receive any federal, state, institutional, or private financial aid for which you are eligible without that eligibility being reduced because of the HEER Fund Grant.

We know that the last few months have brought much uncertainty and disruption to the lives of our students, faculty and staff. Thank you for being flexible as the situation continues to change and for being patient as we distribute these grants.

If you have questions about your eligibility, please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid at

*The original email inadvertently left out enrollment in Thru sessions as a qualifier for the grant. This email has been edited to reflect that.
